To Split or Not to Split

When you attack forward, a split-step well executed can help you cover either side.

Timing the split-step is essential.  If you do it too early, it will be a stop.  If you do it late, the ball may go by, out of your reach.

Rather than a stop, make the split with a forward body tilt so the unbalance will help your momentum towards your next move.

Time your split-step landing to your opponent’s hit so you are immediately leaning to the side you need to cover and starting a jump.

If the ball is not far from you, make this jump forward and diagonally to intercept the ball.

The closer you are to the net, the more decisive your volley can be.
