To Split or not to Split

When you attack forward, a split step well executed can help you cover the sides.

Rather than a stop, make the split with a forward tilt so the unbalance will help your next move.

Time it to your opponent’s hit so you are next leaning to the side you need to cover and starting a jump.

If the ball is not far from you, make this jump forward, diagonally, to intercept the ball.

The closer you are to the net, the more decisive your volley can be.

If you have to reach afar, jump straight to that side. It may make your volley more defensive, but at least you’ll reach the ball.

Timing the split step is essential.  If you do it too early, it will be a stop.  If you do it late, the ball may go by, out of your reach.
